EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index is the world’s first comprehensive assessment of how some of the world’s biggest, listed suppliers of meat and fish are managing critical sustainability risks. It analyses a $300bn group of 60 companies based on a set of nine sustainability risk factors. These are:

  • Greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Deforestation and biodiversity loss;
  • Water scarcity and use;
  • Waste and pollution;
  • Antibiotics;
  • Animal welfare;
  • Working conditions;
  • Food safety; and
  • Sustainable protein (not scored)

The Index aims to improve corporate disclosure on sustainability issues by all major livestock and fisheries companies and bridge the knowledge gap for investors on this sector.

Key findings from the report and dataset include:

  • Thirty six companies, worth $152 billion, rank as ‘high risk’ on overall management of ESG risks. Three-quarters of these are based in Asia, which is poised to lead global trends in meat and dairy consumption.
  • Marine Harvest, the world’s largest salmon farmer, is the top scoring company in the Index.
  • Antibiotics mismanagement is the most poorly addressed risk in an industry that is the primary global consumer of antibiotics.More than three-quarters (77%) of companies in the Index classify as ‘high risk’ when it comes to managing and reporting on antibiotics use.
  • Waste and pollution is the best managed risk in the Index.
  • Across the animal protein sector, reporting and management of GHG emissions is inadequate, unstandardised and unverified. Over 72% of the companies in our Index showed poor or no reporting on this issue.
