The FAIRR Initiative is pleased to invite you to join us for a briefing and discussion on The Future of Food: Investment Risks and Opportunities, kindly hosted by Neuberger Berman.

Protein demand is changing rapidly and unevenly around the world. Asian consumers with growing incomes are also developing a growing appetite for meat and dairy, while a mix of health, sustainability and animal welfare concerns is feeding a trend toward low-meat diets in the West.

Meanwhile, protein production is facing an enormous environmental challenge. Animal agriculture is responsible for over 15% of global GHG emissions – more than the global transport sector – and consumes nearly 80% of arable land worldwide, despite only accounting for a third of global protein intake. Producing protein now and in the future in ways that stay within our planet’s limited resources is an essential challenge for today’s food companies and capital markets.

Businesses are grappling with these contrasting trends already. An industry survey found that the top two issues affecting meat businesses were pressure to reduce meat consumption – and rising demand in China. At the same time, market research indicates the alternative protein market is set to double by 2024.

What do these changes mean for investors? How should investors work with companies to manage the risks and seize opportunities across this changing landscape?
