Main own plant-based brands
ICA own-brand and ICA Gott Liv (Good Life) range offers some plant-based products.
- ICA is one of Sweden’s largest retailers, with over 50% of the grocery market share.
- ICA publicly recognises the need for sustainable meat consumption. The company has responded by asking its most relevant suppliers to set science-based targets and expanded its range of plant-based/alternative protein products.
- However, the company has no sustainable sourcing approach on animal proteins to address impacts on water and biodiversity (beyond local sourcing). Its unclear how the company is working with its animal protein suppliers on climate impacts (in addition to encouraging target adoption by suppliers).
- We encourage the company to build on its work by adopting a formal approach to portfolio transition. We would encourage the company to continue to broaden its sustainability focus and build a more strategic plan to transition its product portfolio (through, for example, category-based targets) to ensure that any exposure to animal proteins is in line with a low-carbon strategy.
