FAIRR Commentary

Yum! Brands developed its global policy in 2017 to reduce and eliminate the use of medically important antibiotics for chicken only. There have been no updates this year since the publication of their policy – for example, the company has provided no indication on whether the scope of the policy will be extended to include other species. This is despite being previously subject to a shareholder resolution in 2017 focused on getting the company to adopt an enterprise-wide policy to phase out the use of medically important antibiotics for disease prevention in both its meat and poultry supply chain. This was eventually withdrawn.

In terms of implementation, the company references certain international efforts to reduce antibiotic use and monitor compliance. However, the company’s brand specific commitments including their most recent commitment from Pizza Hut in June 2018 are only for their U.S. operations.

FAIRR Recommendations

We would encourage Yum! Brands to further strengthen their programme by:

  • Extending their policy to cover all relevant animal-derived proteins where antibiotics is prevalent, and all suppliers across relevant jurisdictions.
  • Extending the scope of their policy beyond medically important antibiotics in order to phase out the routine use of all antibiotics and/ or only use antibiotics when there is a disease present and administered by a veterinarian.
  • Setting targets and timelines for all relevant species sourced.
  • Clarifying whether all suppliers across international markets are subject to third-party audits in line to Yum! Brands Good Antimicrobial Stewardship. 
  • Reporting more comprehensively and publicly on implementation progress for all markets including antibiotics use.
