As part of World Antibiotics Awareness Week, the FAIRR Initiative is pleased to take part in this insightful panel discussion on ‘Antibiotics in Agriculture’, co-sponsored by Harvard Law School.

The panel is introduced by Chris Green, Executive Director, Animal Law & Policy Program and moderated by Nicole Negowetti, Clinical Instructor, Animal Law & Policy Clinic. This lively discussion is formed of experts from a variety of fields :

  • Andrew Jacobs, Global Health Reporter, New York Times

  • Chris Oliviero, General Manager, Niman Ranch

  • Dr. Payal Patel, Infectious Disease Specialist, University of Michigan

  • Sydney Riess, Public Health Campaign Associate, US PIRG

  • Kezia Smithe, ESG Analyst, FAIRR Initiative

Among other things, they explore how the current animal agriculture model has led to an increase in routine antibiotic use and the impact this has on the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are pathogenic to humans. Through the conversation, the panel also discusses how the finance and business sectors can help to address the issues brought by antimicrobial resistance and prevent the next pandemic.
