Created as a collaborative investor network, FAIRR aims to equip investors with the data, research, and engagement tools needed to address these risks and catalyse a global shift toward a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable food system.

The Paris Agreement is a landmark global treaty under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It unites nations to tackle climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°C, aiming for 1.5°C. Countries commit to ambitious climate action through nationally determined contributions (NDCs), which are reviewed every five years.

Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures launch

EU ban on antibiotics

The European Parliament approves legislation restricting the use of antibiotics in healthy farm animals to combat the rise of antibiotic-resistant “superbugs.” Over 97% of member states support the move, which targets preventative mass medication of livestock. The law, which comes into force in 2020, marks a major shift toward responsible antibiotic use in the animal protein industry, and is hailed as a victory for responsible investors.

Amazon Soy Moratorium launch

Investor Action on AMR coalition launch

January 2020

Together with Access to Medicine and the UK Government, FAIRR launches Investor Action on Antimicrobial Resistance (IAAMR) at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The initiative brings together investors representing US$14 trn in AUM to address the global threat of drug-resistant infections, which caused an estimated 4.95 million deaths in 2019 and could cost the global economy up to US$100 trn by 2050. IAAMR encourages investors to integrate AMR considerations into investment decisions, engage with companies, and take concrete actions to combat AMR across humans, animals, and the environment.

Coller FAIRR Climate Risk Tool launch

The Coller FAIRR Climate Risk Tool is the first model to quantify how climate risks could impact 40 of the world’s largest meat and dairy companies. Developed with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and refined through consultation with investors and academics, it provides a robust, science-based framework. By assessing the impacts of carbon taxes, feed costs, and heat stress under various scenarios, the tool enables investors to evaluate potential risks and opportunities, supporting more informed and resilient investment decision making.

The EU Taxonomy launches to define the criteria for economic activities that are aligned with a net zero trajectory by 2050. The classification system aims to help the EU meet its 2030 climate and energy targets, to support investment under the European green deal and protect private investors from greenwashing by creating a common language and a clear definition of what is sustainable.

The statement stresses the significant role intensive animal agriculture plays in driving global GHG emissions, deforestation, and biodiversity loss, posing systemic risks for economies and portfolios. The landmark Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework sets concrete objectives to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.
