About the Seafood Index

What is the Coller FAIRR Seafood Index?

As FAIRR approaches its 10-year anniversary, we reflect on a decade of impact, including the success of the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index. Launched in 2018, the Index has become a trusted resource for financial institutions seeking to integrate sector trends into investment decisions and stewardship.

In line with our commitment to innovation and sector relevance, we are excited to announce the development of a new, dedicated benchmark: the Coller FAIRR Seafood Index. This index will assess 20 of the largest seafood and aquaculture companies, selected based on revenue and market capitalisation.

The Coller FAIRR Seafood Index will offer robust, company-specific insights, enabling investors and stakeholders to better understand the material risks and opportunities facing the fast-evolving seafood and aquaculture industries.

Why are these risk and opportunity factors material for the seafood sector?

Seafood production – both wild-caught and farmed – faces a range of unique material risks, including pollution and ecosystem degradation, unsustainable feed sourcing, insufficient traceability and poor animal welfare practices. These challenges pose significant threats to environmental sustainability and the long-term viability of the industry.

Yet innovation is creating new opportunities. Practices such as regenerative aquaculture and the cultivation of low-impact, unfed species offer scalable solutions that support healthier marine ecosystems while addressing food security.

We are working with investors, companies and industry experts to develop a bespoke methodology that will evaluate risk and opportunity factors in seafood production. This work builds on insights from our two ocean-focused investor engagements: Seafood Traceability, which explores the risks of limited supply chain visibility, and Sustainable Aquaculture, which addresses the impacts of using wild-caught fish as feed in salmon farming.

How do we engage with companies?

Stakeholder engagement is central to the development of the Coller FAIRR Seafood Index. We begin by consulting subject-matter experts, academics, investors and industry representatives to provide feedback on the proposed methodology. Following assessments, companies have the opportunity to review and respond to their individual evaluations.

After the Index launch, we will continue the dialogue, offering companies the opportunity to discuss their performance and explore key areas for improvement. This collaborative approach helps drive sector-wide progress while supporting investor decision-making on material risks and opportunities.
