Traceability is increasingly recognised as a critical business capability for the seafood sector. By enabling companies to trace products from ocean to plate, robust traceability systems support more sustainable seafood supply chains, help address illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights risks, and improve the ability to respond quickly when issues arise.

Despite these benefits, full-chain, digital and interoperable traceability remains far from standard practice. Many seafood companies continue to rely on paper-based records and disconnected systems, limiting visibility across supply chains. Even when companies have traceability systems in place, gaps elsewhere in the value chain can make it difficult to track products back to their source.
