Join FAIRR Initiative and Seafood Legacy for this in-person panel discussion, as we unveil the first-ever Coller FAIRR Seafood Index and explore what it means for investors, companies, and the future of the seafood sector. The index evaluates 20 of the world’s leading seafood companies, including six Japanese firms.

Japan has one of the largest numbers of early adopters of the TNFD globally, demonstrating strong interest among Japanese companies in nature-related disclosures. The country is currently in a transition phase from voluntary to mandatory sustainability reporting, with the Financial Services Agency of Japan and the Sustainability Standards Board of Japan (SSBJ) advancing the institutionalisation of sustainability disclosures aligned with ISSB standards. Mandatory disclosure in annual securities reports is expected to be introduced in phases, starting with major listed companies.

As home to a globally significant cluster of leading seafood companies, this transition toward mandatory disclosure represents a potential turning point not only for Japan’s seafood sector but also for the global market. With greater standardisation and formalisation of disclosures, investors are gaining improved ability to assess and compare companies’ business model resilience, as well as their sustainability-related risks and opportunities, in a more objective and consistent manner.

The publication of the index provides a critical opportunity to enhance transparency around how Japanese companies are responding to global material risks and challenges, while also fostering dialogue among investors, companies, and other stakeholders. As corporate value is increasingly defined not only by financial performance but also by environmental and social responsiveness, Japan’s seafood industry is entering a pivotal phase in aligning with evolving global expectations.
